Autumn Home Exterior Maintenance

School is back in session and fall is just around the corner, making now the best time to repair any damages before the first frost sets in. You are probably already doing some other home maintenance projects like yard work (raking, sprinkler system inspections) interior checkups (HVAC, plumbing and chimney inspections) and checking your foundation for cracks. Be sure to take a walk around your property looking for signs of damage to your home's exterior. By being proactive and making necessary repairs you can rest easy knowing that your home is in peak condition before harsh fall and winter weather hit.

Siding: Wash and Secure

Your home's siding may show signs of residue buildup, especially if there are plants, shrubs, or trees nearby. Wash your siding to keep it looking fresh and check for loose areas that can easily detach in a storm.

Windows and doors: Weatherstrip

Repair windows, doors, and doorframes that need to be fixed and use weather stripping or caulk to seal areas where cold outside air can seep in and warm inside air can seep out.

Painting: Still Protecting?

Look for peeling or blistering paint on your home's exterior, signs the paint is failing and will no longer protect your home's siding. Cooler temperatures and lower humidity make now the perfect time to paint your home's exterior if necessary.

Stucco: Stained or Cracked?

Inspect your stucco for leaks, missing or aged caulking, cracking, black discoloration, bulges in the finish, or missing stucco—but do NOT pressure wash any stains. If you have any doubts about the condition of your stucco, schedule an inspection by a professional before moisture intrusion leads to extensive damage and rot.

Roofing: Repairs Are Crucial

As your home's first line of defense, now is the time to make sure your roof is ready for fall and winter. No need to physically get onto your roof, simply perform a visual inspection, using binoculars if necessary. Look for missing, loose, buckled, curled, or cracked shingles, stains, sagging areas. Also, check for damage to flashing in valleys and around vents, pipes, chimneys, and skylights. If a few shingles are damaged, they should be replaced immediately, but if you have a lot of damage, it's probably time to replace your entire roof.

Gutters: Clean and Clear

The beautiful fall leaves are going to start making their way right into your gutters. As one of the major causes of ice dams, clogged gutters need to be cleaned out and old and damaged gutters need to be replaced. By cleaning and clearing out your gutters and downspouts you can prevent water from pooling and damaging your roof and siding.
